HR, COVID-19 & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY

Phase 2 of reopening business is in full swing now and as many more businesses are adapting to this new reality, it is important to keep in mind that under OHS, you as an employer are responsible for the well being of your employees while at work.

Your employees have the right to ask you for safe working conditions, to refuse work if they deem conditions are not appropriate and report you to Worksafe BC.

Making work a safe space, however, is a shared responsibility.

WorkSafe BC has a great page with guidelines for this phase 2: https://www.worksafebc.com/en/about-us/covid-19-updates/covid-19-returning-safe-operation/what-workers-should-expect

Employers, on the other hand,  “do not need to submit their COVID-19 safety plan to WorkSafe BC for approval, but in accordance with the order of the Provincial Health Officer, this plan must be posted at the worksite” as stated in the WorkSafe BC website.

In their site you can also find a COVID-19 and returning to safe operation page which provides general guidance on developing your plans. Since making your place of work a healthy and safe place is a shared responsibility for employees and employers, it is highly recommended that you involve your workers in the creation of your safety plans. Their insight by being the ones closer to the “action” could be invaluable on helping you address issues before they become problems.

If you don’t have a proper Occupational Health and Safety policy and manual already in place, we can help you create one to assess and comply not only with Covid-19 safety regulations, but with standard, day-to-day measurements.

Let’s start a conversation and keep BC safe and prosper. We are all in this together!
